Gawr Gura Quest for Bread Speedrun mode in Quest for Bread

Treat the lava fortress as a lab, then open the dedicated timer.

Speedrun Guide

Steam lists a dedicated speedrun mode next to silly hats and unique bosses. That is not a community afterthought. Kenny Park shipped a timer for a two-hour campaign because the movement is the toy: jump, spin, trident, camera. This page is how to use that mode without wrecking a 100% file.

Demo times are homework, not a world record board

Public Next Fest captures already show people treating the lava fortress as a route. Graphene Speedruns posted a demo time of 2:43.96. DiabloFG posted Demo% in 2:41. Those numbers are not full-game world records. They are proof that the slice is short enough to grind, and that optional pickups are the first thing a runner deletes. Watch the ignored white sphere on the grey rock. That sphere is the grammar of every later skip.

The video in the middle of this page is a real Demo% capture. Use it as a lava read, not as a promise that the 27 August 2026 campaign is three minutes long. The shipped game is still about two hours for a story file. Speedrun mode compresses that by deleting sightseeing.

What dedicated mode is for

A story file is for jokes, hats, and named bars such as Mori Calliope. Speedrun mode is for a clean timer and a route you can restart without guilt. Do not hunt cosmetics in the timed file. Mark hats in the hat tracker on a second save. Do not open the boss guide mid-timer unless a named fight is the current split; study arenas the night before.

Practical rules:

  1. Learn jump apex and spin hang in How to Play until magma rooms feel boring.
  2. Clear the walkthrough once so you know which palette change is a boss door.
  3. Copy the demo habit: walk the grey path, ignore side sparkles, keep the camera on the next landing.
  4. Save-anytime still exists. A reset is cheaper than a five-minute backtrack after a spin into lava.
  5. After a PB, go back to the Guides Hub and decide whether the next session is hats or another timer.

Routing the rooms we can actually see

Lava fortress: orange is death, grey is life, the torch pillar is optional. Runners skip the white orb. You should too until you have a story clear.

Calliope concert: skull platforms packed under pink light columns, a red throne, a named bar. This is a split, not a hallway. Watch one telegraph cycle offline. On a timed file, enter with cyan HUD healthy and do not turn around for a hat.

Torii dialogue: Gura, Amelia, and Ina talking pickles is a rest room. Mash, pick the trident back up mentally, leave. Do not search the wet platform on a timed file.

Starry canyon: the death plane is a long fall under a bathtub sky, not magma. Camera habits from lava do not automatically transfer. Reset your look-down reflex.

Why the campaign felt short on purpose

Kenny said during development that a solo side project would not be a long game. Steam settled on roughly two hours plus hats and this mode. If a friend asks whether two hours is “enough,” send them the review. If they ask how to go faster, this page is the answer: delete optional geometry, keep the camera honest, and treat bosses as exams you already studied.

Speedrun mode is also where Steam Deck Verified plus full controller support matters. A drifting stick is a reset. Confirm dead zones in Getting Started before you chase DiabloFG’s demo number on a full file that is many times longer. If a timed file still feels messy, you skipped a verb in How to Play. Fix that before another reset.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for first-time shark pilots and 100% hunters.

Is 2:41 the full-game record?

No. It is a Demo% time from the Next Fest slice. The full campaign is still about two hours on a story file.

Should I hat-hunt in speedrun mode?

No. Use a story save and the hat tracker.

Controller or keyboard for the timer?

Whatever you can aim a camera with. Steam lists full controller support and Deck Verified; see How to Play.
