Gawr Gura Quest for Bread Quest for Bread review

Whether two hours, hats, and Myth jokes are enough for the launch price.

Game Review

Gawr Gura: Quest for Bread launched on Steam on 27 August 2026 as a paid, single-player 3D action-platformer. Kenny Park developed it; holo Indie published it. The store pitch is honest: roughly two hours, tight acrobatic platforming, simple combat, unique bosses, silly hats, and a dedicated speedrun mode. This review is for people still on the fence after the 10% introductory week that ran through 3 September 2026.

What you are actually buying

You play Gura with a glowing trident. You jump, spin, and fight through colourful, joke-heavy stages so a shark can reunite with lost bread. The premise is a Hololive in-joke (baguette goes missing, Amelia Watson tries time travel, the jump fails) that still works if you have never watched a stream. Steam says so explicitly. A captured scene of Gura, Amelia, and Ninomae Ina’nis on a torii platform talking about interdimensional pickles is the tone: rest, punchline, then another death plane.

Public footage matches the pitch. The lava fortress is a grey-rock exam over orange magma. The Calliope fight is a concert floor of cyan skulls, pink light, a red throne, and a named health bar. A starry canyon under a bathtub sky shows Kenny’s older claim of multiple distinct visual spaces still holds. This is not a 40-hour Metroidvania. It is a short, authored platformer with collectibles.

Score, length, and price

User reviews on Steam sat at Very Positive during launch week, with about 96% of tens of reviews in the positive column as the count climbed through the first days. Peak concurrent players sat in the low hundreds. That is a healthy indie launch, not a live-service spike. Length is the real debate. Kenny warned in 2025 that a solo side project would not be long; Steam printed “roughly 2 hours.” Hats and speedrun mode are the second evening. If you need eighty hours of systems, this is the wrong SKU. If you want a clean weekend shark game, it is the right one.

The game is English-interface only. This wiki is not. Do not expect a French pause menu. Steam Deck is Verified, with full controller support, save-anytime, no quick-time events, Steam Cloud, and eleven achievements. Multiplayer does not exist. Bring a friend to watch Calliope’s skulls, not a second pad.

Who it is for

Buy it if you like short 3D platformers, Hololive Myth cameos, or both. Use Getting Started and How to Play on night one. Use the walkthrough if lava already won. Hunt hats later with the hat guide. Study named fights in the boss guide. Open speedrun mode when the fortress is memorised.

Skip it if you wanted codes, gacha, or a Roblox title. This is a Steam purchase with a beginning and an end. The launch notes keep store facts current; the demo notes explain what Next Fest already taught.

Verdict

Quest for Bread is exactly as advertised: a bite-sized, very positive, Deck-friendly platformer with a trident, a baguette, and enough Myth jokes to make a first clear smile. Two hours is a feature when the movement is the joke. Hats justify a second file. Speedrun mode justifies a third. The 4K demo capture in the middle of this page is a fair look at jump height and lava reads before you spend. After you buy, the Guides Hub is a better index than rereading a review. The short version if you only wanted a paragraph: buy it for movement and jokes, not for systems. Then open the Guides Hub.

One more practical note: watch the 4K demo clip for jump height, then spend. If the art style already annoys you, two hours will not convert you. If the jokes already land, hats will justify night two. Very Positive at launch is a temperature check, not a religion. Play the movement. Then decide whether you are a completionist or a timer person. The wiki has doors for both.
